Can you play with more than 2 players in Nioh?

Nioh allows for only 2 player cooperative play except in the Abyss (unlocked after beating the first difficulty) where it is possible to have up to 3 players. When you first start the game you will be put into a prologue mission of sorts before you start the main campaign.

These people (hosts) have to visit Shrines (checkpoints within a stage) and then place an Ochoko cup (a co-op item) at them in order to summon a visitor into their world. If the host or you (the visitor) dies than the mission ends for you and you are returned to your game (back to the Random Encounters menu).

Why is there no PvP mode in Nioh 2?

Because this requires a shrine to do, any mission without a shrine cannot be played coop in this way. There are currently no PvP modes in Nioh 2 and the developers have no plan of implementing it.
